Nyepi Day in Bali

I know I’ve been posting about Bali a lot lately, but my father lives there, so I have a connection to it, and if you’ve been there, you know why it’s so easy to love this wonderful island.  Once in a while my dad sends me messages about what’s happening on the island, like a funeral procession that he sees from the window of his office.  This morning it was the following about Nyepi– pretty interesting!

“These 2 days are Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu holiday.  This is the day when the evil spirits go past Bali and by custom Bali shutsdown with no activity that can be seen from the water, no lights, no boats, no flights, etc. The intent is depict Bali as an uninhabited island so the evil spirits just keep going past.”

This is interesting. In Mexico, we have the “evil eye” but business continues as usual.

Isn’t the evil eye an ongoing thing there? I just found out too that this Balinese holiday is part of the New Year there, too. The island requires all tourists to stay in their hotels.
