As you probably already know, some of the best examples of Roman architecture stand outside Italy, in places like Jordan and Turkey. This Roman amphitheater in Pula, Croatia stands at the water, looking back toward Italy across the beautiful blue Adriatic Sea.
This ancient landmark, called the Pula Arena, is special because it is the best preserved amphitheater from the Roman Empire. Because it still looks much the same as it did 2000 years ago, it’s easy to imagine the 23,000 spectators watching gladiator fights. Apparently the arena’s towers had “sprinklers” that sprayed water on the spectators, and the arena could be covered with “sails” to protect the people from the sun or rain. Pretty amazing!

So funny, we have Pula in Sardinia too, a little different though, famous for its beaches. It’s so interesting to visit Roman ruins outside Italy, Croatia must be one beautiful country.
Funny that there’s another Pula. I had no idea. I haven’t been to Sardinia— one day for sure.
