A Travel Photo Treat: Prague

Novy Svet, Prague

What is in that tiny pink house? I still ask myself that, 14 years after coming upon it for the first time.

Long days wandering Prague by myself, free of schedules and expectations, but full of love for a city whose details continued to surprise me even after so many visits… On one of those days, I discovered the walled alley of Nový Svět (“New World”) in the Prague Castle district. This old, quiet, quaint pocket behind the imposing castle fast became my favorite place to feel like part of the “real Prague,” away from the crowds yet still connected to its history. Its walled streets, tiny houses, old street lamps, art galleries, and funky details pulled me back on every subsequent visit. Later I stayed here; the view from my room was of a field and garden tucked behind buildings.

This is just one of many less-touristy things to do in Prague. I’ve written a guest post on the easyJet Holidays blog called A Not-So-Touristy Trip to Prague… Here’s a preview: Prague is one of the highlights of Europe.  Its architecture, views over the Vltava River, and charming back streets make it a truly beautiful and special city.  However, the city’s fairly compact center means that it is very crowded with tourists, especially in summer.  While the touristy sights are well worth visiting, there are plenty of less-touristy things to do there.  These are my 5 favorites…

Very cool, Jenna. You never saw anyone going in or coming out of that house? It does make you curious, doesn’t it? What a wonderful area of Prague to visit. I’m glad, but surprised it hasn’t become touristy!

No, I never saw anyone coming or going, and the strangest part is that there is/was a man’s head (a fake one) in the front window. It seems like that house is too tiny to be a house, but it has its own number… I don’t think the area will become touristy because there isn’t a whole lot “to do” there besides walk, visit galleries, and see the nearby monasteries, which is the way I like it! :-)

We’re heading to Prague in just over a week, so I’m glad I found this! I’ll definitely check out your article for some non-touristy options – we’re spending 8 or 9 days there, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore Prague’s nooks and crannies (I hope). =)
