I love birds. Really. So when we went to Bali the first time, I was sad not to have time to visit the Bali Bird Park but made absolutely sure we would get there during our second visit. Our one-day visit to the park and the Sangeh Monkey Forest ended up being my favorite day on the island. I guess I’m a sucker for animals.
It’s also a fantastic place to take kids. My son loved it perhaps as much as I did. He got to be up close and personal with some incredibly gorgeous and gentle birds.
We were able to hold and feed some of the birds:
We watched 2 bird shows. They were very entertaining and, because this is Bali, the backdrop was beautiful, too.
A very serious-looking eagle ready for take off:
It was nice to see the birds outside cages with the freedom to fly around.
Feeding time for the baby:
Even though the park is Balinese, there are birds from all over the world.
The grounds of the park are beautiful and include not only traditional Indonesian structures, but also a lovely restaurant with an area for small children to play. This made our lunch there much easier– hooray for kid-friendly places!
One of the best things about Bali is the people. They are so friendly and seem to radiate warmth with their beautiful smiles. The bird handlers and other people working at the park were no exception.
The Bali Bird Park is right across the street from the smaller but also interesting Reptile Park. Care to handle one of these guys?
If you’ve thought about taking your kids to Bali, don’t hesitate. There are many things for them to enjoy, including the family-friendly Bali Bird Park. You may also want to check out more of my travel with kids series.
Have you been to Bali? Or have you been to another bird park? Please share.

Wow those birds look so beautiful, watching them you realize how powerful nature is. I went to a lovely bird park in Brazil, IguaƧu. Although I’m not a fan of zoo or anything that keeps animals in a cage, the park was really well organized and I was happy to see animals are free to wander wherever they like..
Jenna, We are heading to the Bird Park with Jack and Cathy this weekend so your post was very well timed. Love variety, quality and color of your photos. We hope to duplicate your results. On Monday we are flying to Labuan Bajo, Flores for a day trip to Komodo National Park to see the dragons up close and personal. Love, Dad
Lovely pictures
beautiful. Did you find that the birds were treated well? I heard that the Bali zoo is pretty dodgy, and I guess that’s why I didn’t visit the bird park when I was in Bali…I wasn’t sure if the animals were well treated or not.
That is a great question and one that I definitely thought about when I visited. I thought the birds were very well-treated, but you know, one never knows what goes on when the birds are not out for shows, etc. They all looked great, though. I have heard the same about the Bali zoo and did not visit when I was there. My dad lives on Bali, so I will have to ask him if things are getting better at the Bali zoo.
I love your photo of the hungry baby bird! I love animals too and have been to a bird park in Guatemala which I enjoyed. Our tour guide was only 11 years old, but incredibly knowledgeable.
The bird park in Guatemala sounds nice. There must be great places to see birds in Central America.
You have some fantastic shots in today’s blog – and it does look like a fun place to take kids.
My husband and I are both into birds – we’re not nerdy or geeky about it but we do buy a bird book for every trip and have fun discovering what’s out there when we travel.
Thanks, Leigh. I love that you get a bird book when you travel– I agree, it is fun to see what kinds of birds are there because they are so different around the world.
My daughters would love those birds! The reptile maybe not so much.
Great photos.
I’m sure she would– it really is a great place for children.
This is really nice post! Love all the bird shots and looks like you had a great family day together.
We did! Thanks, Cheryl!
The Owl thing in photo 4 looks like it is scheming!
Beautiful! I love birds and animals! This is definitely on the list for my Indonesia trip!
Amazing birds and photos! I love them too – looks like a wonderful day out =) Did you see the monkeys too?
Yes! http://wp.me/p1E0Yt-zC I take it you’ve been there?
Really lovely shots, Jenna. My youngest daughter is completely enthralled with birds as well. Especially eagles and falcons.
Thanks, Sophie. There is a raptor center near our house– I should take my kids there to see if they like eagles and falcons as well.
I’d never thought birds could be so tame. Amazing.
These were very tame, from being raised in captivity, I guess.
Wow, I’m glad I visited your site via StumbleUpon! Beautiful photos and captions! Now, I need to put Bali on my list. Thanks!
Thanks. Yes, Bali is worth a visit
That is so cool! And your son is so cute — I bet he was psyched!!
He was, but I think I was more psyched than anyone!
You guys would LOVE the Bali Bird Walk in Ubud. Are you still there?
Thanks for the tip! I am not there but will go again in 2013. I don’t know about the bird walk. Can you tell me more about it?
