I love birds. Really. So when we went to Bali the first time, I was sad not to have time to visit the Bali Bird Park but made absolutely sure we would get there during our second visit. Our one-day visit to the park and the Sangeh Monkey Forest ended up being my favorite day [...]
A Travel Photo Treat: Java’s Volcanoes
Sometimes the best views of the places we visit are from the airplane (if you’re fortunate enough to get a window seat, that is). On this short flight from Jogjakarta, on the Indonesian island of Java, to Denpasar, Bali, I was treated to this view of 3 of Java’s volcanoes. It is moments like these [...]
ArtSmart Roundtable: Prambanan Hindu Temples
This is the second round of the ArtSmart Blogging Roundtable, and this time the topic is religious architecture. It took me a long time to choose what to write about because I adore religious buildings of all kinds. In 2009 my husband, son, and I spent two weeks at my father’s house in Sanur, Bali. We had some wonderful experiences, but my favorite day of this trip was the one we spent at the Bali Bird Parkand the Sangeh Monkey Forest near Ubud. I guess I have a soft spot for animals.

Nyepi Day in Bali
I know I’ve been posting about Bali a lot lately, but my father lives there, so I have a connection to it, and if you’ve been there, you know why it’s so easy to love this wonderful island. Once in a while my dad sends me messages about what’s happening on the island, like a funeral procession [...]
A Travel Photo Treat: Bali
My last morning on the magical island of Bali… Eating breakfast on the beach and feeling disappointed because after just a few wonderful days on Bali, I wasn’t at all ready to leave. Watching this woman walking slowly along the water in the early morning, balancing stuff on her head as many locals there do, [...]
A Travel Photo Treat: Bali
Bali is Hindu, making it unusual among the mostly Muslim population of Indonesia and giving the island a strong and unique religious feeling. One of the ways a visitor can witness this is through these little offerings. The Balinese prepare offerings to the gods every morning or at times throughout the day. They consist of fresh flowers, incense, [...]
