As we all know, not all sweaters are created equal. Some stretch out or are too thin, others pill right away, and others aren’t cozy enough. In my ongoing quest to streamline my wardrobe, I’ve turned to cashmere and alpaca for almost all sweater purchases. After trying cashmere from a few places, I’ve settled on Everlane cashmere sweaters for the balance of quality, style and price, but I’ve also really fallen in love with alpaca. Plus, I love supporting a company that aims to be more sustainable.

And after trying many of Everlane’s sweaters, I have determined that they make some of the coziest sweaters out there! You know those puffy swears that feel like a big warm hug? They excel at those.

Here are my main tips for shopping Everlane’s sweaters:

  • their cashmere tends to be thicker and more substantial with nice small details that show style and quality
  • their ReCashmere line uses recycled cashmere (yes for sustainability!)
  • I love the little details of Everlane’s sweaters: the richness of the colors, the double stitching on the sleeves of their cashmere, and many other details make their sweaters some of my favorites!
  • their alpaca sweaters are a dream: So cozy, like wearing a warm cloud!

Everlane Alpaca Crew sweater review

Everlane alpaca sweater review
Everlane alpaca sweater review: Alpaca crew sweater in heather gray

The best sweater that Everlane makes? Maybe! I love the alpaca crew so much that I have three! The feel is completely different from anything else I’ve owned. It’s soft and fluffy and light but also very warm and cozy.

My only caveat about these sweaters is that there might be some inconsistency in sizing. Even though I have two in the same size and style, they are a bit different, and one is much larger than the other. My first one is heather gray (shown above), and the second is heather black (below).

Everlane alpaca sweater review
Alpaca sweater in heather black, size XS (runs large)

My old light gray one is softer than the newer black one, so my hunch is that these sweaters soften up with time and wear. And the black sweater is significantly larger than the light gray one even though they are both XS. This doesn’t bother me because I like the fit of both, but the difference in size was unexpected.

How does the alpaca crew fit?

This sweater is quite oversized. The sleeves have a slight balloon shape, and the length is just slightly cropped.

How do I wear the alpaca crew?

I usually wear Everlane’s long-sleeved Pima ribbed tee under these sweaters because it’s the perfect lightweight, form-fitting layer. This will depend on how sensitive your skin is, but I also wear the sweater with just a tank underneath (Everlane’s ribbed tanks are the best). For work I sometimes wear the sweater over a white Oxford collar shirt with the collar sticking out. I usually do a French tuck with just the front of the sweater tucked into high-waisted jeans or pants.

Does the alpaca crew snag or pill?

No snagging at all. There’s just a bit of pilling, but I found that the fluffy texture of the sweater makes pilling less obvious. I’ve had these sweaters for more than two years and have not had to use a sweater shaver! I tried alpaca blend from Quince, and Everlane’s pills much less.

Sustainable/ethical?

Alpaca is a more sustainable choice than wool, cotton or cashmere! Because alpacas have soft hooves and are gentle grazers, they have less of an impact on pastures than other herd animals.

Left top: Alpaca in tonal red and diamond stitch. Right top: alpaca in light gray. Bottom: alpaca cardigan in bone.

The verdict? Yes! The alpaca crew is one of Everlane’s best selling items, and it’s easy for me to see why. I think that the price is very reasonable — less expensive than cashmere and a better value, in my opinion.

Note that Everlane also sells the alpaca sweater in a cropped cardigan, long cardigan and new tee styles.

Everlane ReCashmere Belgian-Waffle Pocket Pullover

This sweater is sold out, but you can use this review to help you with other ReCashmere items at Everlane.

Made from recycled cashmere, this sweater is a win for two reasons. One, the use of recycled fibers is huge because cashmere is hard on the environment (think goats grazing in record numbers due to cashmere’s increased popularity). Second, it’s a lovely piece because it’s super soft and has cute details with the waffle knit and pockets.

Everlane recashmere belgian waffle review

All of their ReCashmere sweaters have a very soft feel and can be worn without a layer underneath. The sweater feels high quality with thick material and nice details on the seams and pockets. The sandstone color is a beautiful taupe just like the photos on the website show.

How does the Belgian Waffle Pullover fit?

I was worried that the Belgian Waffle Pullover would be too boxy and that the pockets would be unflattering on me, but this sweater drapes in an easy yet flattering way. It does not billow out like some oversized sweaters do. The blouson sleeves have dropped shoulders and a very slight balloon effect being larger on top and tapering down toward the wrist.

It hits me below my waist and looks good tucked in or untucked. The only downside is that the sleeves are quite long, which makes it feel cozy in cold weather, but I often find myself pushing them up.

Stay with your usual size or one down. I typically wear a small but ordered an XS because their oversized sweaters tend to run large.

Update: My sweater got a hole. When I reached out to Everlane, they sent me a new one but in black because the heathered sand was sold out in my size. Even though I loved the heathered sand color, it turned out to be the best thing because I like the black one even more! The fit is smaller and more cropped in this color, and the waffle texture gives the black depth.

The verdict? Yes, this is a beautifully made sweater with a stylish, comfortable fit. Bonus points for sustainability! I wasn’t sure if it was worth the price, but now that I have the black one, it’s one of my favorite sweaters!

Everlane Oversized Alpaca Cardigan review

Everlane oversized alpaca cardigan review
Everlane oversized alpaca cardigan in bone

Have you ever wished you could wear a blanket on the coldest of winter days? This sweater feels like a cozy blanket but the alpaca is so light and airy, it’s like being wrapped in a cloud.

The color bone that I have is no longer available. Instead, there’s heathered stone (gray), bubble gum (pink), dark green, and black.

I love their alpaca because it doesn’t pill and is super durable. I have several of Everlane’s alpaca sweaters and have never had an issue with any of them.

How does the Oversized Alpaca Cardigan fit?

This sweater is just slightly oversized. Because it’s a long sweater and not boxy, it feels less overwhelming to me than some of the really boxy fits. It’s big but in just the right way — no dropped shoulders or super long sleeves.

I recommend taking your regular size or one size down. I usually wear a small but got this in an XS, and it’s perfect.

Note that how long the sweater is depends on your height. I’m 5’3″ so it ends at about the middle of my thighs.

How do I wear the Oversized Alpaca Cardigan?

Because it’s so long, I wear this with skinny jeans or pixie pants (I have a few pairs — they’re perfect for work or travel), or even with leggings for a casual weekend morning look.

Everlane’s alpaca sweaters are very soft, but it depends on how sensitive your skin is. For me, just a tank underneath is enough.

The verdict? Yes! Like all their alpaca sweaters, this one is a keeper. Soft, cozy, and made to last.

Everlane ReCashmere Stroopwafel sweater review

Everlane ReCashmere review

(My sweater is the crew version of their current stroopwafel turtleneck.)

I was so excited about Everlane’s use of recycled materials and this sweater’s unique texture in the stroopwafel sweater. After a couple of seasons, this is still one of my favorite sweaters! I reach for it all the time!

My favorite thing about this sweater is how cozy it is. Putting it on feels like a big warm hug. The whole ReCashmere line is really soft and warm, and from a sustainability perspective, I love that it’s made from a recycled cashmere/wool blend. The stroopwafel texture (like the cookie of the same name) gives this sweater a cute, unique look.

How does the stroopwafel sweater fit?

This sweater is quite boxy — both the sleeves and length of the sweater were just right. It has wide dropped shoulders, and because I’m petite, they look quite oversized on me, so this would be a better fit on someone with wider shoulders (mine are quite narrow). The good news is that there’s plenty of space to layer it with a collared shirt underneath.

How do I wear the stroopwafel crew?

This sweater is so soft that I don’t need to wear anything under it, although I usually wear a fitted tank or a denim collared shirt underneath. I usually wear it with Everlane’s authentic stretch skinny jeans in black or deep indigo or just a pair of leggings — the slimming pants provide a needed contrast to the oversized fit of the sweater. It has a somewhat cropped length, but because the body of the sweater is big on me, it has too much material for me to wear it tucked in.

Does the stroopwafel crew snag or pill?

No pilling at all, but the texture means it can snag more easily than other sweaters. I should know…my dog’s claw touched the sleeve on the first day I wore it, and now there’s a snag!

Everlane recashmere review

Sustainable/ethical?

Yes! The ReCashmere sweaters are made from 100% recycled cashmere and extra-fine Merino wool. I’m a huge proponent of recycled fabrics, and this one gets it right. The texture is lovely, and I get compliments all the time.

The verdict? Yes … I really do love this sweater. The waffle pattern is unique, the sweater is soft, the colors are gorgeous, and it’s a more sustainable choice.

Everlane cashmere crew review

  Everlane cashmere sweater reviews

This sweater is a basic piece from Everlane. It’s not as thick or durable as some of their higher priced sweaters, but it’s a classic cashmere sweater available in a range of colors. I have it in black, forest green, and gray/white stripes. However, Everlane has launched an updated cashmere crew style with a thicker neckline, and the New York Times Wirecutter chose their crew as one of their favorites for quality and price.

How does the cashmere crew fit?

This sweater fits true to size. I typically wear a small in tops, and the small in this sweater fits as expected. It’s not fitted but also not oversized at all, and the sleeves are the perfect length. The sweater hits me at my hips, so it’s not cropped.

How do I wear the cashmere crew?

I usually wear a fitted tank underneath even though it’s soft enough to wear on its own. I also layer this over dresses and use a thin belt to tuck it in — have you seen this trick? Now I can wear almost any dress to work in the colder months!

For an easy weekend look, I wear the cashmere crew with high waisted jeans, a scarf, and cute trainers or my Allbirds.

All of Everlane’s cashmere crews and V-necks have the double stitched sleeve, shown below. It adds a subtle yet welcome detail, making the sleeves a bit more interesting and flattering.

Sustainable/ethical?

This is true for all the Everlane’s cashmere (not ReCashmere) line: cashmere isn’t a particularly sustainable choice. Everlane uses Grade A cashmere from Mongolia. This means that the cashmere is thicker, top quality and more likely to last over time, but after some research, I discovered that the production of cashmere is radically changing the environment in Mongolia.

As the demand for good cashmere skyrockets, Mongolians who raise goats are making a better living, but the goat’s harmful grazing is quickly destroying the landscape (see more here). This shows the importance of more sustainable options like alpaca, recycled cashmere, or buying second hand cashmere like these used Everlane cashmere crews on Poshmark.

Does the cashmere crew snag or pill?

After more than a year of wear, there is some pilling, but this is to be expected. I use a sweater shaver to remove excess pilling from my sweaters every couple of months. This sweater has gotten no snags, and luckily, no holes either (unlike the cashmere I bought from J. Crew, which was thick but got holes fairly quickly).

The verdict? Yes! The cashmere crew sweater is one of Everlane’s best selling items because the $120 price and quality make it a great value.

Everlane cashmere dress review

Everlane cashmere dress review
Cashmere dress in oat with Everlane Glove boots

(This one is no longer available, but I have two of their older versions and can say that they are a great quality staple for my winter work wardrobe. Everlane has the polo cashmere dress and Quince has a very similar turtleneck cashmere dress and one ribbed style for an incredible price.)

One of my favorite picks in the winter is a cashmere dress. It’s a one-and-done look that’s comfortable, warm, and versatile enough to wear almost anywhere including work. This year’s cashmere dress from Everlane is an easy choice with Grade-A cashmere (like all their cashmere now) and three basic colors: oatmeal, black, and dark gray donegal.

The cashmere is soft and feels great on my skin, not itchy at all.

How does the cashmere dress fit?

I took my usual size, a small, in this cashmere dress, and it fits great. It’s a relaxed fit so stay with your usual size or maybe even one size down. One welcome change from some of their previous (much shorter) designs is that this one hits just above the knee.

The turtleneck is tall so is best worn folded (versus standing straight up, which came up too high on me).

How do I wear the cashmere dress?

I love this cashmere dress with tights and these low boots. The dress is a bit shapeless so I also wear it with a belt. The cashmere is soft but I prefer to layer it with this super-soft TENCEL tank underneath.

The verdict? Yes! The cashmere dress is a beautiful classic that I will get a ton of wear out of.

Everlane sweater reviews of some past pieces…

Everlane cashmere tee review

(This style is sold out but may return next year. For now, check out Quince’s cashmere tee.)

I love cashmere tees for an early fall or late spring look. Like their other cashmere this season, this sweater is made of their Grade A Mongolian cashmere. It is soft and appears to be well made with a thick, high quality knit. Along the hem it has the reverse stitching that Everlane often uses in the sleeves of their cashmere sweaters to provide just the tiniest bit of detail.

Everlane cashmere tee review

How does the cashmere tee fit?

I always wear a small in Everlane sweaters, but this one was too small. It says “Relaxed Fit” on the website, but I disagree — on me it runs small in the upper chest and shoulders. I exchanged it for a larger size and would recommend ordering up a size.

How do I wear the cashmere tee?

It’s slightly cropped so looks good tucked in. I love wearing this with navy blue pants for contrasting shades of blue.

The verdict? Yes! The cashmere tee is a well made classic but you may want to order a size up.

Everlane Italian merino rib polo review

Everlane merino ribbed sweater review

This ribbed polo sweater is one of my most worn pieces! It’s so light and soft that it doesn’t really seem like a sweater, but I’m including it in this review post because it’s made of merino wool. The design is so cute but with a retro vibe, and it’s one of my favorite things to wear to work, especially when I need a cute top for Zoom meetings!

How does the merino rib polo fit?

It fits true to size or slightly small, so if you’re unsure, order a size up. The sweater fits me except through the bust, so I wish I had ordered one size larger. Note that the shoulders are quite narrow, so if you have wider shoulders, you should order up a size.

I like that the sleeves are longer than the usual short-sleeve sweater; I think this length looks more interesting and elevated. Also, note that it’s cropped.

How do I wear the merino rib polo?

I wear this tucked into paper bag pants, wide leg jeans, or a long skirt that flows away from the body. Because the top is so fitted, it looks good with bottoms with the opposite shape.

The verdict?
Yes! I love this polo sweater and hope that Everlane continues making it — I’d love to see it in maroon and dark brown for fall! I’d also love to see it in a long-sleeve version.

Everlane cashmere turtleneck review

(This style is no longer available. I hope it returns because it’s such a classic! For now, try Quince’s cashmere turtleneck or alpaca turtleneck–so soft!–or try Everlane’s popular square turtleneck.)

The first thing I noticed about this sweater is how sturdy and thick the cashmere is. It’s really a lovely piece that seems like it would last a long time.

How does the cashmere turtleneck fit?

Unlike the other classic cashmere pieces from Everlane, this one runs a little big. I found it too long all over and slightly too big in the sleeves and body, so I’d suggest sizing down. I also found the turtleneck itself to be almost too thick — the neck is too long to leave unfolded, but when folded, it seemed a little bulky.

Does the cashmere turtleneck pill?

All cashmere pills a bit, but this one is very high quality and hasn’t pilled at all.

The verdict? Yes, but it’s not my favorite. The quality of this sweater is excellent and worth the $130 price. But for me the fit is a little off — the neck is too thick for me and it runs a little big. I’d buy it again in navy or black and would size down one size.
